Psychology: In an episode of Buffy which if I recall correctly was 'Conversations with Dead People', Buffy is described as 'having an inferiority complex about her superiority complex'. This has always struck me as great way to describe her personality and her psychology- the internal conflict of being 'The Chosen One', the Slayer, the one with the superpowers who saves the world but also just wanting to be a normal teenage girl, to wear dresses and eat popcorn and hang out with her friends and go to the Prom. Buffy always feels this certain sense of singularity, of being ultimately alone, the one who has to make the tough calls and carry the weight of everything on her shoulders, leading her to naturally feel above normal people. But then she feels guilty for feeling that way! So it's a constant insecurity that she has to deal with. Being a Slayer means being a killer essentially, and Buffy is always very haunted by that aspect of herself. She has dreams about previous Slayers, and their lives and deaths and experiences, and feels a transcendental historical link with all these women past, a sort of sisterhood. The sisterhood thing (which is very important to her) was increased a bajillionfold when she called all the Potential Slayers and created a whole army of Slayers, effectively. The idea of girl power and women sticking together is (unsurprisingly) a big facet of her personality. Buffy's life has been defined by death, and by people leaving her, so it would be fair to say I think that she has 'abandonment issues'. She blamed herself for the divorce of her parents, thinking her unruly behaviour at school was responsible for the end of their relationship, and there's a feeling that she's always lacked that father figure, and always yearned for it, until Giles came along of course. After the death of her mother and two close friends (Tara and Anya) and the systematic failure of all of her romantic relationships she feels doomed to the fate of everyone that loves her eventually dying or leaving her. As a result, she's often slow to trust people and let them in, emotionally. Though when she does fall in love it's always passionate, and she's unfailingly loyal to her friends, who she loves dearly. She also, having died twice, has a certain gloomy outlook on the world that springs from having had to grow up very fast and live through a lot of frankly awful stuff. As a result her sense of humour is frequently wry, dry and cynical-- though she is always unfailingly strong. She has conviction that she's fighting for good and an immense amount of mental resilience. She never gives up, she always deals with things as they come and moves onto whatever's coming next, and at her core buried under years of crap, there IS that sense of a young girl who just wants to have fun and live a normal life. Being normal is pretty much her dream. Other Skills/Abilities: Buffy is exceptionally strong-- not Hulk-strong, but strong enough to kick a normal man across a room and leave him pretty much incapacitated. She also has heightened senses that allow her to sense movement when blindfolded for example, and be able to tell if someone is a vampire-- though her hearing/sight/smell appear to be that of a normal human. She is also able to perform athletic feats out of the normal human range-- she's seen jumping impossibly large distances and displaying acrobatic skills in combat that are beyond the norm. She's a great fighter, both hand-to-hand and with various weapons. She's got crazy reflexes and stamina, and she heals faster than humans too. Other Weaknesses: Other than a weakness for vampire men who are probably bad for her? She doesn't really have any physical weakness, there's no Slayer-kryptonite or allergies to speak of. |

History: The first real significant event in Buffy's life is her move to Sunnydale, the Hellmouth, where she meets Giles, her Watcher and finds out that she's THE SLAYER, which changes her whole life forever, having to accept an inordinate amount of responsibility and her destiny. She attends high school, meets her best friends (Willow & Xander), forms the Scooby Gang and starts fighting evil and saving the world in earnest! Her first formidable enemy is a vampire called 'The Master', who she eventually has to battle, knowing that she'll face him and die, because of a prophecy to that effect. This is important because she renounces her own life and safety for the sake of saving the world, and it's also her first death-- she drowns and is clinically dead until Xander rescusitates her. (Season One) It's not long after these events that her relationship with Angel, a vampire with a soul, which had previously been more like a crush, develops into genuine passionate love. Naturally, she eventually gives in to her desire and sleeps with him- which unfortunately leads to him losing his soul and becoming his evil alter-ego, Angelus, who then proceeds to go on a killing-spree, which she of course blames herself for. Buffy is eventually (after Angelus teams up with Spike and Drusilla, two old vampire buddies of yore) forced to kill Angel and push him into the portal of a hell-dimension which he opened in order to try and destroy the world. This has epic consequences for Buffy, because she's lost the love of her life (again, a huge sacrifice to save the world) and it sends her into a spiral of depression, leading her to run away from home. It also doesn't help that while all this is going on, she has to reveal the fact that she's a Slayer to her mother Joyce, who refuses to accept the truth. Buffy spends a long time away, presumably in L.A, living in a run-down apartment and working as a waitress under the alias of 'Anne', her middle name, in an attempt to escape from being the Slayer. That is until she discovers that young people are disappearing from the streets and being made slaves in an alternate reality, which she successfully puts a stop to, leading her to return home and try to be Buffy again. (Season Two) After this, the next thing to come up is Angel getting somehow brought back to life by the 'Powers that Be', presumably, and also: Faith. Faith is a Slayer (called because Buffy died) and probably Buffy's polar opposite, sort of like a foil. Things between Faith at first go pretty well (after Buffy gets over the initial shock/jealousy aspect of there being more than one chosen one) until Faith's dangerous nature starts to make itself evident. Faith ends up accidentally murdering someone, which Buffy witnesses, and Faith deals with it very badly, pretty much going rogue and then teaming up with the evil Mayor Wilkins. Faith eventually tries to kill Angel (who Buffy has been seeing in secret) and poisons him with a venom which is only curable using the blood of a Slayer. This leads to an epic face-off between Buffy and Faith, which ends with Buffy stabbing Faith in the stomach, and Faith escaping. This is incredibly significant because it's the first (and nearly the only) instance of Buffy being cold enough to hurt another human, and leads to an incredible amount of guilt on her part, she later regrets doing it. Buffy then lets Angel feed off her in order to save his life. She kills the Mayor on Graduation Day in a huge battle that destroys the entire high school, which is a positive thing, along with her surprisingly high SAT scores that mean she can go to college. As it becomes evident that she could possibly have some kind of normal life Angel decides to leave her, to let her have that chance at normality. It does, however break her heart and his. (Season Three) Next up in Buffy's life: we have college. After an initial shaky start (involving an ill-advised one-night-stand and one lecturer being REALLY HORRIBLE to her) Buffy eventually warms to the idea of college-- although at this point things begin to unravel a bit between her friends. Xander doesn't go to college, and Willow starts getting into magic and Tara, Giles feels obsolete and things are generally not that good between any of them. Add to that Buffy's new boyfriend Riley (secretly a soldier working for 'The Initiative', a shady military organisation) and we have some serious alienation going on. Buffy starts working more and more with the Initiative and less with the Scooby Gang, that is until she finds out that the Initiative is secretly creating a weird cyborg demon hybrid creature called Adam, who is nearly indestructible. She eventually defeats Adam after magically fusing herself with her friends and the various strengths of their essences, and makes up with all of them in the process, bringing them closer together than ever. (Season Four) Dawn is the next major development, Buffy's sister who was never her sister before, but who is actually just a fabrication and is really a mystic being called 'The Key', the key which opens the portal to all sorts of different worlds and hellish dimensions. A God named Glory who is trapped in a human body needs Dawn in order to get home to her dimension, and the only way she can do this is by spilling her blood. While Buffy manages to keep Dawn safe for a while, things finally come to a head when Glory works out that Dawn is the key, and kidnaps her, and cuts her, opening the portal that threatens to swallow the world. Again, Buffy is forced to sacrifice herself by throwing herself off a construction tower and into the portal, closing it, and dying in the process, her second death. The time leading up to her death is probably about the most traumatic in her life, as her mum, Joyce, dies of a brain tumor and she also has to deal with Riley leaving her, due to her not really being over Angel and so therefore not giving him all of herself. Not to mention of course learning that her sister (who she has been given a life's worth of memories of) is not actually her sister. (Season Five) Her death is, however, not the end of her story because lo and behold her friends bring her back from the dead! Which she is incredibly unhappy about, because as it transpires she was actually in Heaven, a fact of which they were unaware, assuming she was trapped in a hell dimension somewhere. This is probably the darkest portion of Buffy's life-- she has to claw her way out of her own coffin, she's depressed, alienated, unable to tell her friends why, and completely hating life and being alive. She's stuck in a dead end job and she has money problems and everything is getting too much for her. There's also the fact that the only person who even vaguely understands her is Spike, a vampire with a chip in his head (the only thing stopping him from attacking people) who she hates due to him being evil and also having a disgusting infatuation with her (which she finds nauseating- he built a sex robot with her face). In due course she discovers that for some reason Spike can hit her, which he attributes to her 'coming back wrong', (as he can't harm humans). She embarks on a cycle of, to put it bluntly, violent sex with him because she needs an escape and to be able to 'feel' something, as life is completely numb for her. Eventually she ends the relationship, but Spike refuses to accept it and tries to rape her, another traumatic event which has a profound effect on her. On top of all this she has to deal with three new inept enemies calling themselves 'The Trio' who essentially fail at everything, except when one of them, Warren, shoots Buffy and Tara with one ill-fated bullet. Buffy is saved by Willow, but Tara dies, sending Willow into a vengeful rage which leads to her flaying Warren alive and trying to destroy the world in order to end all pain. Xander saves the day by telling Willow he loves her, and Willow goes away to a retreat in England with Giles to learn how to control her dependence on magic, leaving Buffy down a best friend whilst still trying to deal with coming to terms with being alive, Tara's death, and the aftermath of Spike. (Season Six) Subsequently, the next challenge Buffy has to face is the incorporeal threat of the 'First Evil', a being which is simply the essence of evil and essentially impossible to kill. The First gathers an army of super-strong Turok Han vampires under the Hellmouth which it plans to unleash on the world in order to claim it back and destroy the whole Slayer line (of Potential Slayers). Buffy gathers a force of Potentials at her house, which puts her in a new role of even more responsibility, that of commander and general to an army. She has to learn to make tough decisions and deal with the consequences-- including casualties. One such consequence is the death of several Potentials and the loss of Xander's eye due to a bad call on her part. Spike comes back after having left after the guilt of hurting her, having acquired a soul to be a 'better man' for her. They develop a tentative friendship, and in the final battle, after Buffy has used the power of her mystical Scythe to call all the Potentials and make them fully-fledged Slayers (all the work of Willow!) Buffy admits to Spike (as he's burning up to destroy the Hellmouth and save the world) that she loves him, demonstrating forgiveness and affection which hadn't been there before. (Season Seven) Post-Sunnydale there's a gap of around a year and a half which Buffy apparently spends establishing a worldwide organisation of Slayers and creating a HQ in a castle in Scotland with Xander acting in a 'Watcher'-like capacity, and Dawn having been magically transformed into a giant. There's a new threat in the form of a government military organisation affiliated with the mysterious 'Twilight', who aim to bring about the end of magic and destroy the Slayers. Willow is kidnapped by two old foes, Amy and Warren, (working with this organisation) and Buffy has to rescue her (after being bound in a magical coma which only true love's kiss can awaken, and subsequently awoken by the kiss of fellow Slayer, Satsu). Later, Buffy is magically kidnapped herself by a rogue Slayer named Genevieve Savidge, who Faith has been sent undercover to assassinate by Giles, unbeknownst to Buffy. Unfortunately Buffy jumps to the conclusion that Faith is 'in on it' and thus ensues a huge fight, until Willow finally manages to teleport Buffy back to HQ. The consequence of this is a widening rift between Buffy and Giles, and a renewed animosity between her and Faith. Finally, when Buffy's mystical scythe is stolen by some vampires who have Dracula-like powers, (conveniently coinciding with Buffy having slept with Satsu, and several people walking in on her) this leads to a hunt to retrieve it, all the way to Tokyo. The vampires plan to use the power of the scythe to turn all Slayers back into normal girls, and as they have the power to transform into mist they're virtually impossible to kill. With help from Dracula (an old friend of Xander's, don't ask) Willow manages to use the vampires' own spell against them in order to strip them of their extra powers, reverting them to normal vampires, and the scythe is reclaimed. Not without casualties however, as Xander's almost-girlfriend dies in the course of events, and Buffy tries her best to comfort him.
